OVERVIEW:
This north central Seattle neighborhood was named for the 19th century lumber mill owner and real estate developer, Guy Phinney whose estate was purchased by the city in 1899 and converted into Woodland Park. His estate was vast and included a private animal menagerie and land spanning from the top of the ridge to Greenlake. Woodland Park Zoo occupies the western portion of the Phinney estate grounds.
The main spine of the Ridge runs north to south with only a one-half block swath of flat real estate at the top, flanked by a steeply pitched hill rolling westward toward Ballard and easterly down toward Greenlake. The southern end of Phinney Ridge becomes a plateau, offering some of the best southern and western views of Seattle, the Olympics and Puget Sound. Easterly views are framed by the Cascade Mountains, Lake Washington and downtown.
The Phinney Ridge village is a contiguous row of retail shops, restaurants and services on both sides of 67th Avenue offer the nearby clusters of apartments, condos and homes extremely high walk scores. The avenue home to a few eateries that find non ridge residents invading to enjoy. Red Mill Burgers, Stumbling Goat Bistro, Mr. Gyros as well as the 74th Street Alehouse are a few of my favorites.
Transportation downtown and to South Lake Union is short and easy, whether by car or public transportation. The bike ride to the employment core is very accessible, but requires a steep ride to the top of the hill at the end of the day.
The virtual nexus of Phinney Ridge is unofficially the Community Center. Hosting all manner of community events and serving as a meeting place for many groups, most Phinney residents find themselves at the center for some reason.
